The Qu'ran is a Cure

Allaah said that his Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said,

And He feeds me and quenches my thirst and when I fall sick then He (Allaah) cures me. [Soorah Shu'araa: 80].
Some scholars of Tafseer explain that there is a relation between what we eat and drink and falling sick since most people fall ill because of their diet. This could be a reason why Allaah mentioned that Ibrahim (peace be upon him) recognized that Allaah is the One who provides sustenance for us but that sickness is due to our own self and this is why sickness is mentioned after food and drink in this verse.
And We sent down of the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe. [Soorah Israa: 82].
A healing to 'those who believe' showing the importance of rectifying our belief and actions such that we are true believers if we want the Qur'an to benefit us.

Ayub (peace be upon him) called upon his Lord,

And remember Ayub when he cried to his Lord: Verily, distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy. [Soorah al-Anbiyaa: 83].
This was when he was inflicted with harm. And the reply came from his Lord:

We answered him and removed the distress that was on him... [Soorah al-Anbiyaa: 84].
O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (Qur'an) enjoining all that is good and forbidding all that is evil, and a healing for that which is in your breasts, a guidance and a mercy for the believers. [Soorah Yunus: 57].
This shows us that the Qur'an has four benefits:

A good advice.
cure for our hearts from all diseases.
Guidance.
Mercy for mankind.
Say: it (the Qur'an) is a healing for those who believe, a guide and healing... [Soorah Fusilaat: 44].
The Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said, "There is no-one who is afflicted by distress and grief, and says: 'Allaahumma inni 'abduka ibn 'abdika ibn amatika naasiyati bi yadika, maada fi hukmika, 'adlun fiy qadaa'ika. As'aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghayb 'indaka an taj'al al-Qur'aana rabee' qalbi wa noor sadri wa jalaa' huzni wa dhihaab hammi (O Allaah, I am Your slave, son of Your male and female slaves, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the harvest of my heart and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety),' but Allaah will take away his distress and grief, and replace it with joy." He was asked: "O Messenger of Allaah, should we learn this?" He said: "Of course; everyone who hears it should learn it."

And Allaah said:

And if Allaah tests you with affliction, there is none who can remove it but He. [Soorah Yunus: 107].
And also:

And He will give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people. [Soorah Tawbah: 14].
When You sleep Read Ayatul Kursi

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "When you are about to sleep recite Ayatul Kursi till the end of the Verse for there will remain for you a protection from Allaah and no devil will draw to you until morning." [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree].

The Last Two Verses Of Soorah Al-Baqara

The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) also said, "whoever recites the last two Verses of Soorah al-Baqara at night, those two Verses shall be sufficient for him." [Saheeh al-Bukhaarree and Saheeh Muslim].

The Last Three Chapters Of The Qur'an

When retiring to his bed every night, the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) would hold his palms together, blow into them, recite the last three chapters of the Qur'an and then wipe his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with the head and face and then all parts of the body. He would do this three times. [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Muslim].

Soorah al-Falaq and Soorah An-Naas

Aisha (may Allaah be pleased with her) said, "When someone fell ill from the Prophet's family he did 'nafath' on them (to blow three times over them reciting the two chapters of seeking refuge -Soorah al-Falaq and Soorah An-Naas). When he himself fell ill, the illness which lead to his death& I would (similarly) do 'nafath' on him and would wipe him with his own hands for it was more blessed that my hands." [Saheeh Muslim].

We Turn To Allaah In Distress

Allaah said regarding Dhun Nun when called upon Allaah to remove his distress and Allaah replied,

We answered his call and delivered him from the distress. And thus We do deliver the believers. [Soorah anbiyaa: 87-88].
We Turn To Allaah When People Try To Harm Us

And you will remember what I am telling you, and I leave my affair with Allaah, verily Allaah is ever watchful over His slaves. [Soorah Ghaafir: 44].
Then Allaah said:

So Allaah saved him from the evils that they plotted (against him), while an evil torment encompassed Fir'aun's people. [Soorah Ghaafir: 45].
Soorah Faatihah Is A cure

It is also a cure when read over the sick. They are cured by the permission of Allaah because the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said to Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) after he (Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri) read it over a person who had been bitten by a scorpion and was cured, "How did you come to know that it is a cure?" [Agreed upon, Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (2276) with the additional wording, "You have done the right thing."].

Women as Mothers

Allah, the Most Beneficent, has repeatedly emphasized the right of parents in general and the mother in particular. Allah, the Exalted, states in the Qur'an:

(Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him; and that you be good to your parents. If one of them or both reach old age in your life, do not say to them a word of the faintest complaint or disrespect, nor shout at them; but address them in terms of honor.

[17:23]

In this verse the right of Allah to be worshiped is placed adjacent to the right of parents, and all scholars agree that the rights of parents in Islam are greater and placed before all others except Allah. Obedience to parents must be given priority over all others including the wife. This does not mean that the wife is to be humiliated or insulted in any matter, but only that parents should be given priority in obedience over all others on the condition that they do not disobey Allah, the Exalted, and His Prophet (Peace be upon Him). Allah's pleasure or displeasure with man is but an indication of the pleasure of the parents with their son or daughter, as the Prophet indicated (Peace be upon Him) when he said:

"Allah's pleasure with man is through the pleasure of the parents and His displeasure is through the displeasure of the parents."

[Ibn Hibban #429 & Tabrani and verified]

"Birr ul-Walidain" means being obedient, good and kind to them, pleasing them and taking care of their needs, especially in old age. Serving them is considered obligatory service and preferred over participating in the various acts of volunteer service like in some form of Jihad (i.e., striving in the cause of Allah). A man came to ask permission to go for Jihad and the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) asked if his parents were alive to which he replied in the affirmative. Then he said to the man:

"So strive for them and exert yourself (jaahid)."

[Bukhari #2842 & Muslim#2549]

This is also confirmed in an authentic tradition that Ibn Mas'ood (may Allah exalt their mention) narrated:

"I asked Allah's Prophet (Peace be upon Him): 'O Prophet of Allah: What is the most beloved act in the sight of Allah?'
He said: "Offering the prayer in its proper time."
I asked: 'What comes next, O Prophet of Allah?'
He said: "Being good, kind, respectful, obedient and caring to your parents."
I further asked: 'What comes next, O Prophet of Allah?'
He said: "Striving in the cause of Allah."

[Bukhari #5625 & Muslim#139]

In another tradition Abdullah bin Amr bin al-Aas (may Allah exalt their mention) narrated:

"A man came to the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) and said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah! I shall give you my pledge of allegiance to migrate and strive in the cause of Allah seeking His reward only.'
Upon hearing that the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) asked the man: "Are your parents alive?"
The man said: 'Yes, O Prophet of Allah, both of them are living.'
He said: "Do you seek the reward from Allah?"
He said: 'Yes.'
He said: "Then go back to your parents and be the best and kindest companion for them.

"[Muslim #2549]

And in another authentic tradition Mu'awiyyah as-Sulami (may Allah exalt their mention) said to the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him):

'I want to go for Jihad in the way of Allah.'
The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) asked: "Is your mother alive?"
He said: 'Yes.'
He said: "Stay with her, for Jannah is under her feet."

[Ahmad#1557 & Nasa'e #3104 and verified]

This idiomatic expression shows the degree of deference, respect and obedience that the children should show to their mother to earn her pleasure by continuous care and service, which leads to attaining the pleasure of Allah and His Paradise, the promised reward for all rightly guided and devout believers. Mothers have greater right and deserve more kindness, help service, good treatment and companionship than the fathers because the mother is the first one to care for the children and she suffers more directly with daily hardships in their upbringing. Bukhari and others report that Abu-Hurairah (may Allah exalt their mention) narrated:

"A man came to the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) and asked him: 'O Prophet of Allah! Who is the most deserving and worthy of my good company?'
Allah's Prophet (Peace be upon Him) answered: "Your mother."
The man asked: 'Who comes next after her?'
He said: "Your mother."
The man asked again: 'Who comes next after her?'
He said: "Your mother."
The man asked again: 'Who comes next after her?'
He said: "Your father."

[Bukhari #5625 & Muslim#2548]

This comprehensive lesson is a summary proving that the mothers deserve the utmost in obedience, benevolence and concern throughout their lives.

This tradition indicates that a mother has three times the rights of that of a father due to the sufferings she experiences during the various stages of her child's life; in pregnancy, delivery, nursing, and raising the child. Allah, the Exalted, states in the Glorious Qur'an:

(And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and good to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship. The duration of carrying him (in the womb) and weaning is two years. So thank Me and to your parents; unto Me is the final destination.)

[31:14]

Mothers are given priority over fathers in terms of special kindness, care, duty, help, and obedience. Both parents, in accordance with Islamic teachings and principles, are to be obeyed, respected and not differed with as long as they do not command or order their children to disobey their Creator. If they order their children to perform an act of disobedience to Allah then they are to be disobeyed in that particular matter only and a son or daughter must continue to fulfill their normal duties towards parents in other matters. They are expected to serve them, help them in their worldly affairs, and come to their rescue when they need them. Allah, the Exalted, states in the Glorious Qur'an:

(And if parents strive with you to make you join in worship with Me that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not, but behave with them in the worldly (affairs) kindly, and follow the path of him who turns to Me in repentance and obedience. Then to Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what you did throughout your life.)

[31:15]

Parents must be respected, obeyed and offered financial assistance by their children, even if they have a different religion or faith, other than Islam, as long as they do not demand that their son or daughter do any act of disobedience to Allah. Asma binte Abu-Bakr (may Allah exalt their mention) said:

My mother, who was still a pagan, came to visit. I went to the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) seeking his verdict. I said, "She has come to visit and she is interested in Islam, should I maintain my relationship with her?"
The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) said: "Yes, indeed, stay connected to your mother."

[Bukhari #2477 & Muslim#1003]

Islam's encouragement to sons and daughters to treat their mothers with kindness, obedience and care - and to beckon to give any possible assistance to their parents in their various daily household chores - is illustrated in the following lengthy tradition wherein Abu-Hurairah (may Allah exalt their mention) narrated that the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) said:

"Only three infants spoke while still in the cradle.

The first was Jesus, son of Mary (may Allah exalt their mention).

The second was an Israeli at the time of Juraij, a monk who used to seclude himself in a chamber and devote his time to prayer and the worship of Allah. One day Juraij's mother asked for his help while he was engaged with his prayers. He said: 'O Allah! I am confused as to whom should I give priority; my prayers to you or my mother.'

He continued his prayers, and neglected his mother's request for help; upon this Juraij's mother left. On the following morning the mother did the same, and Juraij also continued his prayers and neglected his mother's call for help. On the following day, Juraij's mother came again to him and called him to help her, as she had done in the past two days. Juraij did not respond. Upon seeing that, the mother said: 'O Allah! Have Juraij look at the faces of prostitutes before he dies.'

At the time Israelis used to highly admire the amount and manner of Juraij's worship, prayers and seclusion to which he devoted himself. A very beautiful and attractive prostitute that was popular among the people proposed to Israelis: 'If you wish, I can tempt Juraij and cause him to have illegal sexual relations with me.' The prostitute set out to execute her plan, trying her best to lure Juraij into illegal sex with her, but her efforts were a failure. She then approached a shepherd who used to graze his flock close to Juraij's chamber and offered herself to the shepherd who showed no hesitation. The prostitute became pregnant and upon delivery accused Juraij of being the father of the child. The Israelis went to Juraij in his chamber, drove him out, destroyed the chamber and started beating him.

He asked: "What is the matter? Why are you beating me?"
They said: "You have fornicated with this prostitute and she delivered a baby from you, while you pretended to be a pious man."
Juraij said: "Would you bring the baby here and let me offer my prayers to prove to you that I am not the father of that child.
The Israelis permitted Juraij to offer his prayers, and they brought the baby. When Juraij finished his prayers, he went to the baby and pointed to his belly with his hand asking: "Who is your real father?"

The baby still in the cradle, said:"My father is the shepherd."
Upon hearing the baby's statement and confession, the Israelis started kissing Juraij, seeking his blessings and said:"Should we reconstruct a chamber out of gold for you?"
He said: "No. But just rebuild it of clay and mud as it was built before." And so they did.

The third baby who spoke in the cradle was an infant who was nursing at his mother's breast when a knight wearing fancy clothes passed by on a beautiful horse. The nursing mother said: 'O Allah! In the future let my son be like this knight.'
Upon hearing this supplication the nursing infant left his mother's breast and said, while looking at the knight himself: 'O Allah! In the future do not make me like this knight'. Then the infant went back to sucking.
The narrator of the Hadith, Abu-Hurairah (may Allah exalt their mention), said:
I can remember the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) imitating the infant's nursing his mother's breast by placing his index finger in his mouth and sucking it.'
Then the mother and her nursing infant passed by a maid who was being beaten by her master and others accusing her with fornication and theft. The maid continued to say: 'Allah suffices me and He is My Guardian!'
The mother said: 'O Allah! Do not let my child be like this woman in the future.'
Upon hearing his mother's statement, the infant left his mother's breast and said: 'O Allah! In the future let me be like this woman!'
The mother, upon hearing her infant's statement, addressed him saying: 'Son! What is the matter with you? A nicely dressed knight passed by on a very nice horse, with a high status and power and I wished that you would be like him in the future; but you refused to be like him. Then when we passed by that maid who was beaten and disciplined for an accusation of fornication and theft, and I prayed to Allah for you not to be tortured and accused like her, you also rejected my supplication.'

The infant said: 'O Mother, as for the knight, he was a tyrant and thus I asked Allah not to make me like him. As for the beaten and accused maid, she had neither fornicated nor stolen. Thus I asked Allah to make me innocent and pure like her!"

[Bukhari #3253]

Disobeying parents, disrespecting them and failing to fulfill their rights is the greatest of sins. The punishment from Allah of this sin is not only in the hereafter but in this life as well, as it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) said:

"Two (kinds of sins) Allah will forward (the punishment of) in this world: violent transgression and disobedience of children to their parents."

[Tirmidhi #2511 & Ibn Majah #4211 and verified]

The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon Him) also said:

"Verily, Allah has forbidden you to disobey your mothers, to prevent people from their rights, to ask people for what you are not entitled, to bury your baby-girls alive. He detests for you to gossip, to ask too many questions, or to waste your wealth."

[Bukhari #5630]

The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) illustrated that being good and kind to parents is essential in the fulfillment of the supplications and prayers of man throughout his life, as Ibn Umar (may Allah exalt their mention) reported the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) as saying in a lengthy tradition:

"Three men of the previous times set out on a journey. When night approached they slept in a cave at the base of a mountain. Upon entering the cave, a boulder rolled down and completely closed the cave's entrance. They talked the situation over and concluded that there was no way out of this trouble except with prayers and supplications. 'We had better seek the help of Allah referring to the best and most righteous deed that we have done in our lives.'

The first man said: 'O Allah! I had two elderly parents and I never would offer my wife and children anything to eat or drink before I offered them. One day I had to go a long distance seeking food for my herd and I was late coming back. Upon arrival I found both of my parents asleep. I milked the sheep in order to offer my parents their dinner, but since I hated to wake them up for their drink, I remained standing next to them carrying the milk pot in my hand waiting for them to wake up. I did not offer my wife or children anything before I offered them. At the break of the Dawn, they woke up and by this time my children were at my feet crying for milk. When they woke up, I offered them their milk. O Allah! If you know that I have done that for Your sake, please rescue us from this trap.'
Upon that the rock was moved slightly away from the cave's entrance, but not enough to let them out.

The second man said: 'O Allah! I had a female cousin from my father's side who was the most beloved woman to me on the face of the Earth. I had an intense desire for her, but she refused. At one point in time she came under financial stress due to famine. She came to me asking for help. I offered her a hundred and twenty golden Dinars so that she would let me have what I wanted from her. Under the duress of her pressing need and financial situation she agreed. When I was ready to begin relations with her, she said, 'O Cousin! Fear Allah! And do not remove the seal of virginity except in the rightful manner.' Upon hearing that, I got up and did not touch her, although she was the most beloved and desired woman to me. I did not take back the gold, which I gave her.' Then he raised his hands to the heavens and said: 'O Allah! If You know I have done, what I did, for Your cause and pleasure, please remove the trap that we are in. Remove the rock from the cave's entrance so that we can get out!'
Upon which, the rock moved another small distance but still not enough to enable them to escape.

The third man said: 'O Allah! You know that I once employed some workers and at the end of the day I paid their wages except to the one who had left without collecting his pay. I invested his wages in my business and kept a special note and account for it. The money that belonged to this worker grew during the years, and after many years the worker came to me asking for the wage that he did not take on that day of his work. I pointed out to him large herds of sheep, cows, camels, and slaves and servants, and said to him: 'All that you see is yours! That is the wage that I owe you!' The poor worker was stunned and said: 'Please do not ridicule and make fun of me! I am only asking for my one-day wage. The employer said: 'I am neither ridiculing you nor making fun of you. This is all yours.' The worker took all that I pointed out for him and left.' Then the man raised his hands to heavens and said: 'O Allah! If I have done what I did for Your cause and pleasure, remove the trap from which we are suffering.'
Upon that the rock rolled away from the cave's entrance and the three men left the cave, free once again."

[Bukhari #2152]

Islam teaches that seeking the pleasure of the parents, and being good, kind, helpful, considerate to them, respecting and caring for them throughout their life, is a major way to expiate and remove the burden of our sins in this world. Abdullah Ibn Umar (may Allah exalt their mention) said:

"A man came to Allah's Prophet (Peace be upon Him) and said: 'O Prophet! I have committed a major sin. Do you think that I can atone for it?'
He asked: "Do you have a mother living?"
The man answered in the negative.
The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) asked the man: "Do you have a maternal aunt living?"
The man answered in the positive. Allah's Prophet (Peace be upon Him) said to him: "Be good and kind to her."

[Tirmidhi #1904 & Ibn Hibban #435 and verified]

This tradition indicates her right since the maternal aunt, in Islamic jurisprudence, has a similar status in some respects as of the mother, since the Prophet of Allah (Peace be upon Him) said:

"The sister of the mother has a status similar to the mother."

[Bukhari #2552]

These broad guidelines show the major rights of parents in general, and mothers in particular, and illustrate that mothers remain uniquely respected in Islamic teachings.

O Liars................

Narated By Samura bin Jundab : Whenever the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم finished the (morning) prayer, he صلى الله عليه وسلم would face us and ask, "Who amongst you had a dream last night?" So if anyone had seen a dream he صلى الله عليه وسلم would narrate it. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would say: "Ma sha'a-llah" (An Arabic maxim meaning literally, 'What Allah wished,' and it indicates a good omen.) One day, he صلى الله عليه وسلم asked us whether anyone of us had seen a dream. We replied in the negative. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "But I had seen (a dream) last night that two men came to me, caught hold of my hands, and took me to the Sacred Land (Jerusalem).

1. There, I saw a person sitting and another standing with an iron hook in his hand pushing it inside the mouth of the former till it reached the jaw-bone, and then tore off one side of his cheek, and then did the same with the other side; in the mean-time the first side of his cheek became normal again and then he repeated the same operation again. I said, 'What is this?' They told me to proceed on and we went on till we came to
2. A man Lying flat on his back, and another man standing at his head carrying a stone or a piece of rock, and crushing the head of the Lying man, with that stone. Whenever he struck him, the stone rolled away.The man went to pick it up and by the time he returned to him, the crushed head had returned to its normal state and the man came back and struck him again (and so on). I said, 'Who is this?' They told me to proceed on;
3. So we proceeded on and passed by a hole like an oven; with a narrow top and wide bottom, and the fire was kindling underneath that hole. Whenever the fire-flame went up, the people were lifted up to such an extent that they about to get out of it, and whenever the fire got quieter, the people went down into it, and there were naked men and women in it. I said, 'Who is this?' They told me to proceed on.
4. So we proceeded on till we reached a river of blood and a man was in it, and another man was standing at its bank with stones in front of him, facing the man standing in the river. Whenever the man in the river wanted to come out, the other one threw a stone in his mouth and caused him to retreat to his original position; and so whenever he wanted to come out the other would throw a stone in his mouth, and he would retreat to his original position. I asked, 'What is this?' They told me to proceed on
And we did so till we reached a well-flourished green garden having a huge tree and near its root was sitting an old man with some children. (I saw) Another man near the tree with fire in front of him and he was kindling it up. Then they (i.e. my two companions) made me climb up the tree and made me enter a house, better than which I have ever seen. In it were some old men and young men, women and children.
Then they took me out of this house and made me climb up the tree and made me enter another house that was better and superior (to the first) containing old and young people. I said to them (i.e. my two companions), 'You have made me ramble all the night. Tell me all about that I have seen.' They said, 'Yes. As for the one whose cheek you saw being torn away, he was a liar and he used to tell lies, and the people would report those lies on his authority till they spread all over the world. So, he will be punished like that till the Day of Resurrection.
The one whose head you saw being crushed is the one whom Allah had given the knowledge of Qur'an (i.e. knowing it by heart) but he used to sleep at night (i.e. he did not recite it then) and did not use to act upon it (i.e. upon its orders etc.) by day; and so this punishment will go on till the Day of Resurrection. And those you saw in the hole (like oven) were adulterers (those men and women who commit illegal sexual intercourse). And those you saw in the river of blood were those dealing in Riba (usury). And the old man who was sitting at the base of the tree was Abraham and the little children around him were the offspring of the people. And the one who was kindling the fire was Malik, the gate-keeper of the Hell-fire. And the first house in which you have gone was the house of the common believers, and the second house was of the martyrs. I am Gabriel and this is Michael. Raise your head.' I raised my head and saw a thing like a cloud over me. They said, 'That is your place.' I said, 'Let me enter my place.' They said, 'You still have some life which you have not yet completed, and when you complete (that remaining portion of your life) you will then enter your place.'"

"Whoever treads on a path in search of Islamic knowledge, Allah will ease the way to Paradise for him. The angels will lower their wings, pleased with this seeker of knowledge, and everyone in the heavens and on earth will ask forgiveness for the knowledgeable person, even the fish in the deepest of waters will ask for his forgiveness [Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi # 2835-sahih hadith]

"Seek knowledge, because seeking it for the sake of Allah is a worship. And knowing it makes you more God-fearing; and searching for it is jihad, teaching it to those who do not know is charity, reviewing and learning it more is like tasbeeh. Through knowledge Allah will be known and worshipped. With the knowledge Allah will elevate people and make them leaders and imams, who will in turn guide other people." [Fatawa Ibn Taymiyya vol.10, p.39]

It is only those who have knowledge amongst His slaves that fear Allah.” [Soorah Al-Fatir (35): 28]

“Give the hired hand his wages before his sweat dries.”

– The Prophet Mohammed

In a “sacred narration” God says: “I will be the opponent of three persons on the Day of Judgment.” We learn that the third of these unfortunate souls is “a man who employed another who delivered in full but then was unpaid.”

In the Chapter of The Women in the Quran we are told that: “Indeed Allah commands you to deliver the trusts to whom they are due.”

How a person can go to bed at night while the Quran on the shelf in his house is cursing him as he sleeps does mystify me.

The historian Ibn Asakir narrates in his History of Damascus that the Prophet said: “Whoever goes to bed at night exhausted from the work of his own hand, sleeps having been forgiven by God.”

Still in another narration he tells us that the most wholesome income is one earned by the effort of one’s own hand.

But it is in the verse of the chapter of Yusuf that we learn the two primary conditions for occupying a position of workplace responsibility.

In this verse the Prophet Joseph turns to the Aziz of Egypt saying: “Put me in charge of the grain stores of the country – for indeed I am responsible and endowed with expert knowledge.”

The word for responsible – hafiz – also implies trustworthiness and reliability.

A position of authority is first and foremost a trust – amanah. It is a responsibility to maintain the goals and purposes for which the project or enterprise was undertaken.

It is a trust to protect the resources and well-being of all those involved. Those who are “structurally” below you have effectively placed their well-being in the good faith with which you approached the contract between you and them.

They have entrusted their livelihood in the honesty with which you will balance between the aims of the enterprise and their best interests.

The Muslim is meant to play a leadership role in society, but to do this effectively he must be someone who people can trust and rely on.

Someone they can trust and rely on for their own well-being and for securing the best interests and good health of society. An early Arab poet said: “I don’t live on the hilltops out of fear but so when people need help, they know where to come.”

The second condition mentioned in the verse is to be endowed with expert knowledge.

One must have the qualifications and aptitude for the job. People should not be seeking or accepting positions that they are unqualified for.

If he or she wants a position they should get training for it. At the same time, no one can know everything.

One should avail themselves of expert advice and consultation. There is no excuse not to be intimately familiar with the international standards and best practices of the field with which one is engaged.

All of this is implied by the verse mentioned above.

These two principles, responsibility and expertise, comprise the foundation of the Muslim work ethic.

Upon this foundation stand its four pillars: purpose, positivity, precision, and poignancy.

Perhaps these could be the subject of another essay for another day.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah - may Allaah be pleased with him - who said that the Prophet - صلى الله عليه وسلم - said:

"None spoke in the cradle except three:
  1. 'Eesa the son of Maryam,
  2. Jurayj's companion; Jurayj was a man of worship, he had a place of worship and while he was in it, his mother came in and called upon him. He said to himself; 'My Lord, my mother or my prayer?' So he continued praying and she left. The next day she also came and called upon him while he was in prayer, he said to himself; 'My Lord, my mother or my prayer?' So he continued praying and again she left. The following day she came again and called upon him while he was in prayer, he said to himself; 'My Lord, my mother or my prayer?' So he continued praying.

She said: 'O Allaah, do not allow him to die until he sees the faces of prostitutes. '

The Children of Israel knew of Jurayj and his worship. There was a very beautiful prostitute who offered to seduce him. She attempted to do so but he did not pay her any attention to her. She then approached a herdsman who used to seek refuge in his place of worship, she offered herself to him and he slept with her. She became pregnant, and when she gave birth she claimed that it was the child of Jurayj. They went to him, invoked curses over him, destroyed his place of worship and attacked him.

He said: 'Why are you doing this?'

They responded: 'You fornicated with this woman and she bore you a child.'

He said: 'Where is the child?'

So they brought him the child.

He said: 'Leave me until I pray.'

When he finished praying he came to the boy and poked him in his stomach. He said: 'O child, who is your father?'

The baby boy responded: 'So and so the herdsman.'

So the people turned to Jurayj, kissing him and asking him for forgiveness. They offered to rebuild his place of worship in gold, but he refused and asked them to rebuild it from mud just as it was before, and so they did.

  3. There was also a baby who was being breast fed by his mother when a rider in fine garments passed by on an agile animal.

His mother said: 'O Allaah, make my child like him.'

The baby stopped suckling and looked at him, he said: 'O Allaah, do not make me like him.'

    He then continued suckling…"

Abu Hurayrah - May Allaah be pleased with him - said: 'It is as if I can see Messenger of Allaah - صلى الله عليه وسلم - right now, as he is illustrating the scene of the baby's suckling with his forefinger in his mouth.'

He continued: "They passed by a slave girl who was being beaten by people who were accusing her of committing fornication and theft.'

She was saying: `Sufficient is Allaah is for me, and the best of Guardians He is'

The mother said: `O Allaah, do not make my child like her.'

Again the baby stopped suckling, looked at her and said: 'O Allaah! Make me like her.'

At this point they spoke to each other, the mother said: `A good looking man passed by and I asked Allaah to make my child like him, you asked Allaah not make you like him. We passed by this slave girl while she was being beaten and being accused of fornication and theft, I asked Allaah not to make my child like her, and you asked Allaah to make you like her.'

The child said: `That man was a tyrant, so I asked Allaah not to make me like him. They were accusing the girl of fornication, while she did not commit it, and they were accusing her of theft, while she did not steal, so I asked Allaah to make me like her"

- Sheikh Al-Sheraim

MAKKAH – Sheikh Saud Bin Ibrahim Al-Sheraim, Imam and Khateeb of the Grand Mosque advised Muslims to be mindful of Almighty Allah and seek to please Him and keep away from all that displeases Him.

In his Friday sermon at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Sheikh Al-Sheraim said stability and peace of mind are what all human beings are striving for, even if they differ in specifying their criteria and the means to achieve them.

Some people have a narrow view and restrict the realization of stability and peace of mind to making more money, others see this in achieving a high social status or an official position while others see this in having a large family comprising many children. Even though these concepts enjoy a high esteem in the worldly life, it nevertheless remains a relative matter and differs from person to person depending on the time and the situation.

However, the reality is contrary to all these, and to stress his point Sheikh Al-Sheraim gave examples. He said

  • There are many rich people living in misery because they have not found in opulence the real sense of wealth they were seeking.
  • There are many people in high positions but are not happy and have not experienced any stability or peace of mind.
  • There are others who have large families with many children but are unhappy, anxious and dissatisfied with life.

On the other hand, one may find a person who is poor, does not enjoy a high standing in the community and does not have children, but has a large heart and peace of mind. A poor man may be living in an humble shack but is happy and contented while a rich man may be living in a spacious palace but is still unhappy.

Sheikh Al-Sheraim stressed that the difference between the two kinds is that in the last example, though the man is poor Allah has blessed him with contentment (Ridha). Being content with life is a weapon against its many miseries, Al-Sheraim said.

Sheikh Al-Sheraim further said, “In this age in which there are waves of seditions and catastrophes attacking it, the Ummah is in the greatest need of declaring contentment with Allah as the only Lord, Islam as its religion and Muhammad (peace be upon him) as its prophet. The Ummah is in the diret need to internalize this firm conviction in heart, and proclaim it in word and deed. We hear such a declaration with the tongues quite a lot but that does not serve any purpose. We are in the urgent need for this declaration to be acted upon in our daily lives and in different affairs.”

The hearts are longing to see in the practical reality of people’s lives their being contented with the divine power (Uluhiyyah) of Allah Almighty. This means that they love, fear and seek help from Allah alone. A Muslim should believe that destiny of every person has been pre-ordained by Allah alone. If Allah is satisfied with a person, then that person will be contented and satisfied with his life and will receive care and protection from Allah, Sheikh Al-Sheraim observed.

Sheikh Al-Sheraim said the widespread contentment with Allah’s religion on earth will be a cause for happiness for all Muslim communities. When the Ummah takes pride in its religion and is contented with it as a just arbiter in all its affairs, then it will succeed and will be guided to the right path.

“A society that calls people to piety, reminds them of their duty to Allah, and in whose midst one smells the fragrance of righteousness is a truly contented society that feels the need for this religion the way water and air are necessary for life because any Ummah that neglects its religion and hinders Allah’s word to reign supreme in its midst, is actually neglecting its greatest potentials and not acting for the cause of its success in this world and the Hereafter,” he said.

Al-Sheraim said disturbances, discords, humiliation, fear and chaos are all related to being contented with religion and that Islam is the perfect religion that is suitable for every age and place. It is the religion of compassion, kindness, strength, truth, honesty and uprightness in which people worship Allah alone.

Sheikh Al-Sheraim stressed that the sweetness of belief (Iman) will not touch the believer’s heart unless he is contented with and accepts Muhammad (peace be upon him) as Allah’s prophet and messenger. He should subject himself to the guidance brought by him and submit fully to what was revealed to him.

The teachings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) should serve as the judge in all affairs and a Muslim should not accept anything else. He should not have any feeling of embarrassment regarding what was revealed to our Prophet and his teachings even if they are contrary to his feelings or whims or contradict what has been said by somebody, whoever he might be. Sheikh Al-Sheraim quoted Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) as saying: All my Ummah will enter Paradise except those who refuse.” He was asked: “Who will refuse, O Prophet of Allah?” He replied, “Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, but whoever disobeys me has refused.” Sheikh Al-Sheraim warned that there is nothing more hateful than disobeying the Prophet (peace be upon him) and following one’s whims or desires or giving priority to intellect or casting doubts on the Prophet’s teachings the way some people did.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Hussein Aal Al-Sheikh, Imam and Khateeb of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madina said according to the texts of the Holy Qur’an and the Prophet’s Sunnah, men’s sins are the cause of all tribulations and evil. Sins were the cause for the loss of many bounties and have brought many tribulations, seditions and ordeals.

In his Friday sermon at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madina, Aal Al-Sheikh said the spread of crimes and diseases and lack of security are due to people distancing themselves from the path of Allah and violating the teachings and guidance of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
He stressed that evils cannot be warded off unless we obey Allah Almighty. He said security and stability cannot be achieved except by a firm belief in Allah Almighty and by obeying the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah in private and in public.

He gave examples of the evils and catastrophes that have befallen mankind including earthquakes, hurricanes and wars. He said this is not strange when we see the spread of heinous crimes and hateful sins including adultery (Zina) and satellite channels that entice people to commit sins. He said it has become easy for Muslims to drink liquor, indulge in drug abuse and imitate the unbelievers in their dress and ways of life.

He said the world economies have deteriorated. There are price hikes and high inflation rates and poverty on the increase. Debts are soaring. The Muslim communities are no exception to what the world is suffering from.

Sheikh Aal Al-Sheikh criticized usury (Riba) in commercial dealings and said that some Muslim countries even facilitate usurious transactions. He said some of these commercial dealings are far removed from the tenets of Islam. It is the worldly considerations that are governing people’s values and morals.

Aal Al-Sheikh stressed that to attain contentment with what Allah gives can only be had by obeying Him. He added that blessing (Barakah) in one’s livelihood (Rizq) and in everything else can only be attained by being mindful of Allah Almighty and fearing Him by inculcating righteousness and piety.

He said many countries are suffering from the lack of rain and the spread of drought. He said we must remember and learn a lesson from some Muslims who have neglected paying Zakat or even prevent people from paying it. Some Muslims sell their fruits or crops before they have ripened despite Islam forbidding this. He stressed that any people who do not pay their Zakat will be deprived of rainfall. Were it not for the animals (livestock, etc.) living on the earth not even a drop of rain would have been sent down to it by Allah.

Aal Al-Sheikh said happiness, contented hearts and good living can only be achieved by obeying Allah, not to speak of getting rewarded with a blissful life in the Hereafter. He stressed the importance of glorifying Allah through Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and performance of prayer (salat). He criticized those who replace Islamic laws with secular one’s and said these are among the causes of tribulations and adversities.

Light on the Tongue But Heavy on the Scales

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "There are two statements that are light for the tongue to remember, heavy in the Scales and are dear to the Merciful: `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi, Subhan-Allahil- Azim[Glory be to Allah and His is the praise, (and) Allah, the Greatest is free from imperfection)'.'' [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Riyad-ul-Saliheen Commentary

This Hadith affirms that man's actions carry weight. On the Day of Judgement, his actions will be cast into the Balance. At that time Allah will endow these actions with weight, or according to some scholars, those records which register man's actions will be weighed. This is quite possible for the reason that Almighty Allah is Capable of weighing things without even their physical form. This discussion apart, when actions will be cast into the Balance, the formula mentioned in the Hadith, the utterance of which is very easy, will prove weighty. Every Muslim should make it a practice to repeat them frequently.

Juwairiyah bint Al-Harith (May Allah be pleased with her) reported, the Mother of the Believers: The Prophet (PBUH) came out from my apartment in the morning as I was busy in performing the dawn prayer. He came back in the forenoon and found me sitting there. The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Are you still in the same position as I left you.'' I replied in the affirmative. Thereupon the Prophet said, "I recited four words three times after I had left you. If these are to be weighed against all you have recited since morning, these will be heavier. These are: Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi, `adada khalqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wa zinatah `arshihi, wa midada kalimatihi [Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with His praise, as many times as the number of His creatures, in accordance with His Good Pleasure, equal to the weight of His Throne and equal to the ink that may be used in recording the words (for His Praise)].''[Sahih Muslim]. Commentary: The recitation of the words quoted in this Hadith is highly meritorious and rewarding because they are full of Praise and Glorification of Allah.

Expression that is most loved by Allah

Abu Dharr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said to me, "Shall I tell you the expression that is most loved by Allah?'' It is `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi' (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise)'.''[Sahih Muslim].

Obliterating Sins of the extent of the foam of the ocean

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "And he who utters: `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise)' one hundred times a day, his sins will be obliterated even if they are equal to the extent of the foam of the ocean.''[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Commentary: Here sins mean minor sins and those which do not relate to the rights of people.

A Palm-tree will be planted in Jannah

Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) said,"For him who says: `Subhan-Allahi wa bi hamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection, and I begin with praising Him, and to Him),' a palm-tree will be planted in Jannah.''[At-Tirmidhi] .

Commentary: Jannah is so vast that we cannot even imagine its vastness. The planting of trees in return for the Praise and Glorification of Allah is, therefore, neither something difficult nor surprising. So, there should not be any hesitation in accepting it as a fact. Some people take it is as a metaphor for a plentiful reward.
